First In-Person
A Walk for Education!
Goal:
The goal of A Walk for Education (AWFE) is "to increase awareness of the opportunities available through education particularly in the STEM fields and to shatter myths about African-Americans in math, science, engineering, and other technologies."
AWFE is a grassroots program in which NSBE members go door-to-door in underserved Black communities and hand out information on college, scholarship information, SAT/ACT/GRE preparation tools, NSBE, and the benefits of majoring in STEM fields.
But instead of going door-to-door, we are gathering at the East Portland Community Center!
Method:
Rationale:
We do this to help fulfill NSBE's mission, which is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.
By serving the under-served with the academic support necessary to thrive in STEM, we aim to strengthen and diversify the next generation of STEM professionals.
The AWFE Walk Event:
The Portland Professionals Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE PRO-PDX) will host its first in-person walk on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at the East Portland Community Center at 740 SE 106th Avenue, Portland, OR 97216 (from 10 AM to 2 PM PT).
During the event, we will present information about NSBE, academic success strategies (for both undergraduate and graduate success), career opportunities in STEM, collegiate and trade school admissions information, financial aid (and literacy), and mentorship opportunities. This year, we will partner with BHIRD LLC, Mentor$chip, and the Coalition of Black Men for an engineering showcase, digital scavenger hunt, and scholarship giveaway.
We will have food, networking opportunities, music, and fun for the whole family! Come out and join us! (Please RSVP to help with food estimations)
The AWFE Virtual Portal:
The NSBE PRO-PDX chapter will also maintain an AWFE Virtual Portal so that the critical resources we present during the Walk Events can be available to students year-round. In addition to the recordings of the Walk Events, our portal will hold:
-
Engineering Profiles: Descriptions of the different STEM disciplines along with their career benefits
-
Academic Success Resources: SAT / ACT / GRE preparation materials, effective study habit resources, tips for selecting a college/graduate school/trade school, financial aid and literacy, mentors and more
-
Career Opportunities: The NSBE PRO-PDX Job Board and networking opportunities with our corporate partners.
Next Steps:
